NAME
ftype - extended file type command
SYNOPSIS
ftype
[file] ...
DESCRIPTION
Ftype
performs a series of tests on each
file
argument, to determine the file type.
It is essentially an extended version of the
file(1)
command, which can recognise many file types that
file
reports simply as "ascii text" or "data."
Ftype
looks at the first one to eight bytes of each file argument, to
determine whether it is one of the file formats it knows about.
If not, it calls
file
to take a guess at it.
Ftype
can recognise most of the Spinal Cord Research Centre's own file formats,
as well as a number of other formats, such as
PCL fonts,
ARC archives,
GPS and gpsras image files,
and many others.
BUGS
The
-f
option of the
file
command is not implemented in
ftype.
Because this command is merely a shell script, it can be very slow.
