Individuals who made significant contributions to the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences from the graduate student level to lifetime achievements and service were honoured at an Awards day on October 4th, 2000 at the St. Boniface Research Centre. The Honourable Peter Liba, Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba, brought greetings from the Province. Among those honoured was the University of Manitoba's own Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies for the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Ed Kroeger. Dr. Kroeger was awarded the Jack Litvack Exemplary Service Award for his leadership in graduate training, animal care and ethics, teaching and research. Dr. Kroeger initiated and coordinates the Faculty of Medicine's Research Day. Dr. Kroeger has touched and improved the lives of many students and young Faculty members. The Institute also introduced the Henry Friesen Young Scientist Award; the first recipient was Mr. Brad Doble, a Ph.D. trainee in Dr. Elissavet Kardami's laboratory in the Institute. Mr. Doble was recognized for his work on the study of growth factors and their significance in the heart structure and function.
