DESCRIPTION: The Winnipeg Chapter Society for Neuroscience is pleased to
announce this upcoming\n Manitoba Neuroscience Network Seminar...\n\n D
 ate: Friday\, November 25\, 2011\n Time: 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM\n Locatio
 n: PX236/238 PsychHealth Centre\, Bannatyne Campus\n\n Dr. Larry Jordan
 \n Professor\, Department of Physiology\n University of Manitoba\n\n T
opic: Control of locomotion by a serotonergic pathway arising in the para
pyramidal region of the medulla.\n\n Please see the attached notice and
post in your area to advertise.\n\nDr. Jordan's Bio:\nBorn in Paris\, Tex
 as\, in 1944\, I grew up in Texarkana\, Texas\,\nthe son of a bakery work
 er/farmer and a first grade teacher.\nI earned a B.A. degree in zoology a
t the University of Texas at Austin\, and\nthen entered graduate studies
at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical\nSchool in Dallas\, where
  I was supervised by William D. Willis\, Jr.\, a student\nof John Eccles
in Canberra\, Australia\, and a former President of the Society\nfor Neur
oscience. I moved to Winnipeg in 1970 to assume a post-doctoral\nposition
with Dr. John Phillis\, also trained in Canberra\, who was a pioneer in
\nCNS neuropharmacology. John moved to Saskatoon to take up the position
of Head\nof Physiology there\, and I remained in Winnipeg\, supported by
a Medical Research\nCouncil Scholarship. Since that time I was able to pa
rticipate in the creation of the Winnipeg\nSpinal Cord Research Centre (h
ttp://www.scrc.umanitoba.ca/)\,\nwith funding from the Health Sciences Ce
ntre Research Foundation\, the annual\nWill-to-Win Golf Tournament (2012
will be its 29th year!)\, the Canadian\nInstitutes for Health Research\,
the International Human Frontier Science\nProgram\, the Canadian Network
of Centres of Excellence\, and the U.S. National\nInstitutes of Health. I
was the PI in the Canadian Institutes of Health\nResearch Group on Spina
l Cord Functional Systems for a number of years. I\ninitiated the formati
on of the Winnipeg Chapter of the Society for\nNeuroscience\, and I serve
d two terms as Head of the Department of Physiology\nat the University of
Manitoba (1992-2001). My research has focused on the neural control of\n
locomotion\, with progress along three major lines of investigation: (1)
\nidentification of the brain areas and neural pathways responsible for\n
providing descending messages for the initiation of locomotion\, (2) the
study\nof spinal cord neurons that control locomotion at the spinal level
and (3)\ndiscovery of new physiological properties of spinal motoneurons
and\ninterneurons that are central to their recruitment during locomotio
 n. I am\ncurrently focusing on a descending pathway from a discrete serot
onergic\nnucleus in the medulla that is involved in the initiation of loc
omotion and in\ncontrol of inter- and intralimb coordination\, and I am d
oing experiments to\nevaluate the potential of these neurons to restore c
oordinated locomotor\nmovements after transplantation into the spinal cor
d of paraplegic rats.\n\n For more information on Dr. Jordan's research\,
  visit his website at:\n http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/medicine/physiolog
y/contacts/jordan.html\n\n For more information\, contact the MNN Office
  at\n (T) 235.3939 or email: mnn@sbrc.ca\n\n Presented in co-operation
with University of Manitoba Clinical Neuroscience Rounds\n An initiative
