Any SCRC or Physiology department members who need to use a computer when they
give classes, seminars or other presentations in the Physiology Library,
room 431 BMSB, can now have Internet access.
As of July 31, 2003, there is an Ethernet jack available in that room,
installed by SCRC personnel.
It is located near the floor in the northwest corner of the room, under
the whiteboard.
What you will need to use it
a computer equipped with an Ethernet interface, with an RJ-45 jack
an RJ-45 cable sufficiently long to stretch from the corner to where
you will place your computer
an IP address for the 4th floor BMSB subnet
A 25-foot RJ-45 cable is available from the general office, should you need
to borrow it for your presentation. Ask Judy or Gail for it.
If you use your own cable, make sure it is a "straight-through" cable,
and not a cross-over or peer-to-peer cable. A cable designed to connect
a computer to a hub or switch will work, while a cable designed to connect
one PC to another will not.
If you already use your computer for Internet access elsewhere on the
4th floor, Basic Medical Sciences Building, then you should already
have an IP address allocated to it, which will work in room 431 as well.
If you do not already have an IP address on the 140.193.42 subnet, you
will need to have your computer registered on the SCRC's DHCP server.
In either case, your computer must be configured to obtain an IP address
automatically from the server.
Obtaining an IP address on this network
To register your computer on the SCRC's DHCP server, please e-mail Gilles,
grdetil@scrc.umanitoba.ca, or Matt, matt@scrc.umanitoba.ca,
with the following information:
Computer's Ethernet (MAC) address:
Your Name:
Your Office no./Building:
Your Phone no.:
Type of computer:
Type of Ethernet interface:
UM property no. of computer:
You can get your Ethernet address by running the "winipcfg" command
from Start->Run under Windows 95/98/Me, or running "ipconfig /all"
from the Command Prompt under Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista/7. On the Mac you can
get this from the Apple System Profiler (Apple menu->About This Mac,
More Info...), or from the Network icon in System Preferences, on Mac OS X,
or from the TCP/IP control panel on Mac OS 9 or older.
